Christmas Day 2008

What a busy day!!!! We were able to wake up at 8am... I guess we better appreciate that one ha? Pretty soon Sky will be waking us up. We didn't have Kayden Christmas morning, so it was just the three of us. It was kind of nice for me and Ty because we were able to exchange eachothers gifts and have kind of a 1st "our" christmas. Sky didn't really care about the whole thing. He like the wrapping more than the actual presents. The little turd.

Then we went to my dad's where the kids were over spoiled. I don't think that there isn't one toy, outfit, or jammy that they didn't get. It was fun to see them all go wild opening the presents.
Then we went to our house to do Santa gifts with Kayden. I think that this will be the last year we do Santa gifts at our house for Kay when he doesn't sleep there. Santa goes to one house. Not fair to the siblings. But that just means that all of his gifts will be from Daddy and Jennie. Spoiled lil' man!

No we're not done yet! We then went to nana's. We ate yummy dinner, prime rib, opened presents, and played the Wii. It is so funny to watch the boys box. It was such a great Christmas all around. I wish that these kids understood just how lucky they are... Next year we are going to do a sub for santa so the kids can see how good it feels to helps others. And also my mom and I are going to do a Christmas Tree for Festival of Trees in name of Skylar's heart surgery. It will help raise money for Primary Children's. I will also be out of school so that I can put my focus into fun projects like these.

As many of you know, Christmas also dumped snow! So Kayden and Ty came home and shoveled. They had a blast! And yes I decided to lighten up and not worry about Kay getting sick. Although not with sky, he was stuck inside with me. He kept hitting the sliding glass door to go outside. Next year buddy.

Christmas Eve 2008

The Holiday season is ALWAYS so so busy, but we love all of the quality time we get with our families. At the beginning of our Christmas Eve we went to The Utleys house to celebrate. This is all of my step mom's family. This side of the family has had a tough couple of years. They have lost a son a few years ago and their father a few months ago, with grandma also having her own health battles. Luckily we all have such a great family and support system. We had a lot of fun over there. Tyler is a chatter butt and can mingle with anyone. Love his guts.

Then at the end of the night we went to my mom's for the traditional pizza and presents. Every year we used to get pajamas on Christmas Eve, so I have decided to carry on the tradition in my family. We didn't have Kayden this year, so that is why he is missing. Also nana and pop got a Wii for the family. There are a few picture of my mom and phil boxing. FREAKING hilarious! I kept winning, until my brother came along. Boy am I sore. It is a great workout... Wii Fit here we come!

Family Date Night

So daddy has been working quite a bit of overtime the last week, so he decided to surprise us with Tepanyaki and Christmas lights. Dinner was amazing as always. This time we went to the Lehi location. We were going to go to Thanksgiving Pointe afterwards, but the line was awfully long, so we decided to go drive around by our house and look at lights. There is a house called Christmas Utah (google it) that has lights set to music. It is kind of a tradition now for us to go see it. Skylar that it was pretty cool. As you can tell by his expression. It was a good night out with the fam, makes me feel grateful to have them.

Gram's Christmas Party

This weekend was our Christmas Party at Gram's house in Scipio. We have decided that it is much more fun and easier on the boys if we spend the night down there. We stayed up pretty late playing Tony Hawk on the Nintendo 64, but of course Ty and Kayden couldn't beat me. ha ha ha. Then on Sunday everyone arrived and we ate, sang, played bingo and dice, and finally opened presents. It was a good weekend. The boys made out pretty good. Even got money jars that count for you... It is also such a small world and our good friend mario was down with his girlfriend visiting their family. Our party was at the same time their's was, so unfortunately we didn't get to go sledding with the Clidesdale (spelled wrong I'm sure) horses. Maybe next time. Thanks for such a great weekend Gram and Papi.

KayDen'S ChRistMAs ProgRaM

Today we went and saw Kayden's kindergarten class sing Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer and Jingle Bells. He did so good, he didn't do the hand motions, but at least he sang. He has his daddy's shyness. It is so crazy to realize how big he is getting. He is also getting very good at sounding out words, I'm sure that reading is right around the corner. No more spelling things out in front of him, because now he will U-N-D-E-R-S-T-A-N-D.
He is middle row, seventh in from the left

And We're Discharged...

So Skylar was doing so good we got to come home yesterday. We had an echo before we left yesterday and everything looked pretty good. He still has an insignificant hole between his ventricles, but nothing to worry about. The surgeon said that sometimes it is impossible to get every leak. We go back for a check up in 3 weeks and then every year for a few years and then every 3 years for the rest of his life... just to make sure everything is still okay. Hopefully he will never have to go through this again. On another note, his pain is pretty well under control. He was having a bit more today so I called and got a lortab order just in case. He is also having nightmares and also had a night terror today. I can only imagine the horrible things that are going through his head when he sleeps. Poor baby. He had to sleep with mommy and daddy last night... His incisions look great and hopefully his scar will be minimal when he gets older. We are so proud of our strong little boy and are so grateful to still have him in our lives. The surgeons, cardiologists, nurse practitioners and nurses were so great up there. In fact, we had such a great experience that mom has decided to change her career path and go work up at Primary Children's Hospital, probably in the Pediatric intensive care... but we'll see. I love the great attitudes and the innocence of all the children up there. You don't get that very often with adults.

Causing trouble...

I cannot believe the 180 that Skylar has done within the last couple of hours. He is just back to his good ol' self. I almost thought... maybe we should give him a little something to make him go to sleep LOL. Just kidding. It makes me so so happy to see him causing trouble. I never thought I would say that. Enjoy the videos. Sorry they are bad quality.... Believe it or not, I have almost finished 2 and a half tapes of recording stuff here, so if you weren't able to come up, I have it all on camera :-) Hopefully we will be home tomorrow if all continues to go well.... we have yet to transition to oral pain meds, so that is our last obstacle.

My StRonG Lil' MaN

So today we got the chest drain out and the pacer wires. Boy was that hard to see my son go through that much pain. Especially since they didn't remove all of the sutures before they tugged. Oops! But he lived. He is so strong and I am so proud of him. It took about 4 or 5 hours, but he is FINALLY feeling better now. By 630 he was crawling, standing up and playing with Aunt Kaylee and his cousin clarissa. We even got some smiles out of him. It is so good to see him finally happy. If he transitions well over to oral meds and if he starts eating better we may be able to go home tomorrow. He also has an echo tomorrow to make sure that the heart function is good. It's only up hill from here....

Finally to A Room

Well at about 1pm today they gave us a room... well kinda. They are completely full up here, but they put us in a procedure room on the surgical unit. Can't complain though, the room is huge! It's so nice to be out of the ICU because we can watch movies, eat in the room, have multiple visitors, and we can take him out of the room!!! Today we put him in a little radio flyer wagon and wheeled him over to the playroom with his brother. Of couse he didn't play, but at least it got him out. His pain is getting more and more under control and his little personality is starting to shine through again. He smiled a little and said mama a few times. It makes me so happy to see him get better. Here are some pictures from this afternoon.

PoSt Op DaY #2

Well we had a pretty rough night. Skylar doesn't do well with the lortab, he threw up 3 times... once on mama. Poor baby. Mama finally collapsed last night and got some good sleep. The nurses were great last night and got me a couch to sleep on since there weren't any beds on the floor. Poor dad stayed until 3 am since I was asleep and then went home until 9am. We are hoping to have a room this afternoon so that he can get some good sleep. Home monday...

Post Op Day #1

Well today went very well overall. Skylar got his interjugular IV out, his ART line out, his catheter out, and is able to eat!!! OH I forgot the most important part, he pooped!! Unfortunately he had to get a new IV, and they missed the first time, but we got it the second time. We were suppose to move to a room on the heart floor, but there weren't any beds available :-( This made me really sad because I was hoping that I would get to sleep tonight. NO I haven't slept yet... going on 36 hours... woot woot! Not. Anyways, we are hoping tomorrow morning that they will transfer us. Also it was exciting today, the Jazz players came and visited. They signed a basketball for him, he was still pretty out of it so he just stared at them. Everyone has been so good to him up here and we are so grateful for all of them.

Our night in PICU

Wow! What a night we had. Yes mom has still not slept... okay I lie, I fell asleep for about 45 minutes at 9 this morning. Well we got the breathing tube out at 1am and he did so well that he had his oxygen taken off a few hours later. They have already pulled the urinary catheter. Although he will keep his pacer wires and chest drain for a few days. The only problem we have had is keeping his pain under control and keeping him comfortable. He is a belly sleeper and of course cannot sleep on his belly. He is so resilient to this surgery that he gave us a scare last night. He decided quick to roll to his belly and almost pulled out his central line, chest drain, and ventilator. Talk about my heart dropping. Well I think that we are out of the woods and we will be transferring to the heart floor around 4pm today. Then we won't have visitor restrictions and mom will have a couch bed, yay! But most importantly Skylar will have peace and quiet. As many of you probably don't know, the PICU is a completely open unit with about 43 beds. Kids crying, alarms beeping, and people chit chatting. It will be nice to have a private room. Feel free to come visit him.... only if you are well!!!!
P.S. Take a close look at the small small pictures. Breast milk galore!!!! Go healthy skylar :-)

Out of Surgery

Here is my lovely family and friends waiting with me. I don't know what I would do without you.

Well Sky got out of surgery at 7pm. He is doing really well. He has a chest drain, IV's, a catheter, heart monitors, IV drips, oxygen monitor, and is still on the breathing machine. As scary and as sad as it looks, he is doing really good. He has tried to wake up a few times, but not all the way yet. As soon as he does, the breathing tube will come out. Mommy and daddy have a long night ahead of them. I will update you again tomorrow. Thanks for all your support.
Here is a video of my baby sleeping peacefully. Just press play and make sure you mute the music on the side.

Surgery Day

So yesterday we went and did skylar's pre op, unfortunatley they did not get enough blood so we were back up to Primary's at 8pm last night. We decided to read books, Sky likes to just destroy the books. Shhh... don't tell..

And then when we arrived today we had to wait FOREVER. Our surgery time bounced from 6am to 12pm to 11am to 1230pm and finally to 4pm. Wow what a roller coaster ride. My poor sky was so tired and hungry it was so hard.

Once pre op finally came we were so relieved, but just to find out that the other surgery was having complications and we would still have four more hours to wait. Please tell that to a nine month old who hasn't eaten since 8am. They finally gave in and let him have a bottle of apple juice, mainly because he was litterally scaring the shit out of the other kids... literally. Think about it :-) That made him happy and he fell asleep for a few hours in the wagon...

The collage below is of sky sleeping in the wagon... what a good sport. I love you baby. My mom, dad, bestie(kaylee) and my hubby were all waiting with me and Sky.

And now came the hard part... saying goodbye. I honestly felt all of the lights dim around me and realized that I really had to let him go. I don't know how I didn't collapse to the floor. Of those of you who know me well... I don't cry, but I bawled when the doctor took my baby.

Well is in surgery right now. He is in the hands of the best and most expensive baby sitters that one can buy. Good luck my love and I will be with you every single minute when you get out. Breathe....
I will try and keep you updated every few hours. Since I have time on my hands.

Ready or we go!

So today we went and did all of Skylar's pre-op for his surgery tomorrow. We got blood drawn, TWICE, chest xray, and had a history and physical. Poor daddy passed out when Sky got his blood drawn. It was somewhat humorous since we have both been overly stressed. He has his surgery at 730am tomorrow at Primary Children's Hospital. We will be arriving at 6am though. It is going to be a hard hard day. If anyone would like to come see him, all we ask is that you don't bring anyone sick. The best days to visit would be Saturday-Tuesday, since we won't have restricted visitors and he will also have a lot of his tubes out. Thanks for everyones support. We love you all and know that he is in your prayers.

GinGerBreaD HouSes 2008

So I have this tradition in my family to do gingerbread houses every year. With Skylar's surgery and finals this semester, I didn't have time to make my own. So I resorted to the expensive store bought ones. Whether they were home made or not the kids had just as much fun. In past years they just wanted to eat the candy. Carson and Kayden are finally to the age that they like to be creative and decorate them. We had a lot of fun. Thanks to Taryn and Grandma helping, the houses turned out great.

FeStivAl oF TreeS

On Friday I was able to go watch my adorable neice perform at the Festival of Trees. Her little dance group performed and she was the bravest of them all. She got up on that stage, waved to everybody and did her dance. Some of the other girls just stood their because they had stage fright. But Rylee is a natural born star. Ry Ry don't ever stop dancing. Also if you get a chance, you should all go to the Festival of Trees. It benefits Primary Children's Hospital, which you know my family owes much gratitude to. And the trees are all very beautiful and get you into the Christmas spirit. Don't forget to watch the video at the bottom of Ry Ry dancing. Make sure you pause my music on the side first. It's to die for cute.

Grizzlies Game 10

Last night our friend Nick Moss offered us VIP tickets to the Utah Grizzlies Game 10. It was so much fun. Definately the best seats with a baby because he could crawl around in the suite and their were couches and all. We also took our friends Mario and his girlfriend Sha'Lee. It was a super fun night. Adam and Carson.... you're next to go!

Thanksgiving at Grams!

Well this was the year that we got to go down to Gram's for thanksgiving, since we go every other year. Since she lives in Scipio, we decided to spend the night. It was great to see the boys be able to hang out with their great grandma and grandpa.

There are a lot of grandkids on this side. And they all love playing together.

Gram loves her grandkids.

It was a great holiday. I am so thankful for the wonderful family I have on both sides. Thanks gram for a great holiday!

Sky's 1st Hair Cut

And boy oh boy did he need it. Our poor little guy was getting called a girl with his cute little curls he was growing, so we decided to give him a BOY hair cut. He looks like a little stud now. Dad definately had some skills cutting his hair. And YES, I kept his hair. My little man is getting so big.

Fall Fun

So yesterday me, ty and sky decided to work on the front yard. It seems like there is never ending leaves everywhere. Sky was having so much fun crawling around on the grass, I had to capture a picture of him. Look at how cute... Don't tell nana, but he almost choked on a leaf... oops!

Utah Grizzlies

Last night my family and friends went to the E Center to watch the Utah Grizzlies. Let me just say it was a blast! The kids loved to watch the game, and for the 5 year old and 9 year old, they stayed hooked until the end. The Grizzlies even won! They went into overtime and tied, so they had to do a shoot out. The Grizzlies ended up scoring to win it all! I haven't quite decided if hockey is a good thing for the kids to watch because they beat the crap out of eachother and we cheer them on. Is this teaching them bad things??? LOL. Also this night they were all wearing pink jerseys and the rink was pink to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. What a great night. We will definately be going back. Here is a picture of a fight... priceless!!!

My Baby is 8 Months TODAY!

I just wanted to do a post about my little baby Skylar today. He was born 8 months ago today. Time has flown by so so fast. He is just growing like a weed. Ty and I really could not imagine life without him and truly believe that he is the most handsome and beautiful baby eva LOL! But seriously. New things that he learned this past month was pulling himself to a stand and climbing stairs. The cardiologists thought his defect would slow him down, boy were they wrong. He still babbles mamamamama. I'm his favorite... but don't let ty know, it might hurt his feelings :-) We are patiently awaiting his surgery. We love him so much and know that he will bounce back like a champ. Love you baby.

Halloween 2008

My family had such a fun Halloween this year. Since Kayden started kindergarten we went to his school parade that morning. We didn't have kayden this year, so this is the only picture we got of him. He decided a the last minute to be a vampire because he couldn't wear his motocross mask at school. Skylar was a giraffe during the day, which was Carson's first costume, because the spider was too warm.

That night we went to my brothers house to go trick or treating. Taryn and pop were insane clowns and scared the crap out of all the older kids. Taryn got such a kick out of it. We wouldn't let Sky look at them because it would freak him out.

Here is a picture of "part" of my cute family. I was Little Red Riding Hood, Tyler was Dr. Seamore Busch Gynecologist, and Skylar was a spider. I think that Tyler pulled off the hot doctor quite well. Although I don't know about really being married to a gynocologist... AWKWARD lol.

Then later that night we met up with some of our friends and went to the Huka Bar. We had a lot of fun dancing and celebrating until the wee hours...

Kaylee was a sexy little postal worker...

We had a lot of fun with our friends. It's good to get out once in a while and let loose. Thanks nana for letting Sky hang out with you.

The End!!!

The Pumpkin Bash

Well I didn't think that we were going to get to carve pumpkins this year, but we did it last minute. It was really fun too. We carved at Taryns house. Taryn and Ry did a bat, Tyler and Kayden a fish, Me and Skylar a baby's 1st pumpkin, and Nana and Carson an old fashioned original pumpkin face. We managed to not be too messy too. Which is amazing considering we had four kids 5 and under. Well.... Happy Halloween!

Primary Children's Echo

Today we went for Skylar's cardiac surgery work-up. He had a sedated echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, and a chest xray. One of the techs explained these tests well. If you were to consider a house, the echocardiogram is the plumbing because you look at the blood flow in the heart. And the electrocardiogram is the electricity, because you look at the electrical conduction in the heart. And the chest xray is just to see how much his left side has enlarged. Well everything went as expected today. It was so sad seeing him cry after getting an IV. And was so crazy to see him get medications that made him drunk. It was so funny though, he was all loopy and I said "hi baby" and he gave me this drunk chuckle. After all of the tests, we met with our cardiologist. The surgery is to be during the first or second week of December. We need to get mama through finals with school and then they will do it. Otherwise I think I may have a nervous breakdown LOL.
I guess some of you are wondering how they are planning to repair this defect. They will go in through the chest and put his body on cardiac bypass. His heart cannot be moving when they repair it because he would bleed out through the incision, so that is the reasoning behind the bypass. Then they will make an incision through the right atrium (the right upper chamber of the heart) and go through the tricuspid valve and sew a patch over the hole (VSD). With the PFO they will just throw a stitch to close it because it is so small. From start to finish, the surgery will probably take at least 6 hours. When he comes out, he will be in the pediatric intensive care and will have a nurse that has only him as her patient which I am extremely happy about. He will be on a ventilator, have chest tubes, arterial line to constantly monitor his BP (which is just a huge IV line), a central line (which is an IV that has tubing go straight to his heart), peripheral IV's, and all of the monitoring equipment. He will be in the PICU for about 2 days and they will slowly take everything out as he gets better. The ventilator will probably only stay in for a few hours. So if you come to see him, have this picture in your head so that you aren't scared or shocked. This surgery sounds very scary, but just know that they get better very fast and live normal healthy lives. He will have to go to a cardiologist for a work up every 2-3 years for the rest of his life though. Have any questions, let me know. We'll let you know as soon as we know the date...

Skylar's "echo" Blessing

As you all know, Skylar is getting very close to his heart surgery. My family decided to give him a blessing the night before his echo that he had today. My brother and everyone else in my family are such great support. Thanks Adam, Grandpa Merritt, Dustin, and Cory for blessing Skylar. It was a great experience and I truly believe that Skylar has lots of angels looking over him at this time.
